Textured Dog Sweater (with sleeves!)

Updated: Mar 3, 2021

Do you know what bothers me the most about dog clothes? I can hear a smart comment like, "that they exist?" :) But no, that's not it. They don't have sleeves! Why is that? I couldn't imagine buying a sweater (for warmth) that didn't have sleeves- my arms get cold! It's insane!

It's been on my list to make a dog sweater for some time now. Daisy, my little dog at my parents, has always been prone to being cold (not lucky for her that we live in MN). Now that she's getting older, she gets cold easier. We've purchased her sweaters at the pet stores but none of them have sleeves!

I understand that if they wear them outside the sleeves might get dirty but I wouldn't wear shorts in the winter so that my pants didn't get snow on... I am a little bit of a crazy dog lady, so excuse my previous ranting if it's not your thing. But if it is, here is my dog sweater pattern with sleeves so you can keep your whole dog warm. (The larger size I made for Finley couldn't have full length sleeves (to my disappointment) because it's harder to get their long legs into them! I settled for short sleeves- still better than nothing!)

The stitch I chose for the sweater is so simple but provides such a great texture! Who would have thought something as simple as alternating slip stitches with half double crochets would look so cool? I'm envisioning a sweater for myself with this stitch in the near future... add it to the list! ;)

Happy Crocheting!

Here's the Darling Dana Designs original Pattern:

Pattern Notes:

  • Sizing: At this point in time I only have size Small and Large for the sweater. Since dogs come in different shapes (not just different sizes) I used my pups to get some standard measurements for the space in between their legs, chest, etc. If you have a dog that is Medium or Extra Large- use the size down as a start and add stitches. It's pretty easy to manipulate since the pattern is worked in multiples of 2 (slip stitch and half double-crochet) alternating. When chaining- ensure if goes all the way around your dogs chest (a little extra space is good). When you get to the arm holes- try it on your dogs arms after the chains to ensure the spacing is correct.

  • In Collar and Sleeves be mindful that the stitch is showing on the correct side- you can flip inside out when complete.

  • I've created two styles of collar so this sweater can be made for a boy or a girl! The “girl style collar” is made to be folded over in a turtle-neck style but can be adjusted for your pup.

Hey! I've made it to R29 on the larger sized sweater and I'm quite honestly confused on how the pattern reads. Is there anyway there's a video or better description of how to go about reattaching the yarn in the correct spot. Thank you!
